Memorial Day always messes with my head.  First there is the “Whoa! The year is half over…” concept, and then the realization that it’s officially summer hits, and I have to accept that I am woefully unprepared for vacation plans, summer activities for the kids, and house maintenance projects that can only be tended to in dry, warm, weather.  And then there are the wardrobe issues…did I gain too much weight over the winter to fit into last year’s stuff…how pasty white am I going to look in a chic summer dress having spent the entire winter season indoors…will it actually be warm enough over the holiday weekend to dress like summertime…?  So many things to think about!  The good news is, Memorial Day tends to usher in a festive and dynamic social period, and having some fun outfits ready to go always makes the dark fashion cloud disappear.

Trolling the internet for some sartorial inspiration, I came across a few outfit composites that were both regionally/seasonally/age appropriate, as well as perfect for different social activities.  Headed to a backyard Bar-B-Que…?  You can never go wrong with denim and cute shoes:

Is your holiday weekend centered around a casual/chic party where the invitation is just ambiguous enough to give you pause…?  I love this skirt, which minus the denim jacket is dressed up by itself:

Heading to an upscale resort that requires a certain sartorial panache…?  This white crochet dress fills the bill…and the figure flattering one-piece suit is a great way to start the swim season:

Your key pieces for any holiday weekend should be the things that make you smile:  Your favorite jeans or shorts, a well fitted T-shirt or blouse that dresses up and down, a flattering dress that needs only a necklace to take you from tea at the Ritz to beers by the pool, comfortable shoes and of course a sweater.

After all, it may be summer but it’s only the first weekend…!
