I am so lucky to be in a great women’s book club for over 20 years.. It started out as a small friend group, and grew as each of us added a new friend as others moved away. Over time we have coalesced into an awesome braintrust of lovers of literature with varying likes and opinions on our selections.

The reason it all works is because we pick our dates and 80 percent always show up having read the book. Right there that’s pretty incredible.

Our choices go through cycles of selecting books that are the best ever, with fantastic discussions, like most recently, The Covenant of Water (must read). Sometimes however, we pick duds, despite our voting for the best choice of 3 selections each person presents as options each month. Duds happens despite recommendations despite Booker and Pulitzers awarded.

We are not a perfectly aligned group in terms of taste which makes our discussions super spicey and lively. We are respectful and listen to each other and hence we actually learn from each other. This is the fun stuff.

We have become super efficient at zooming but the truth is, it’s harder to keep us focused on zoom calls because it’s too easy to do other stuff while the lap top is open.

We haven’t met in person as a full group but once in the last 3 years which has been kind of weird. Long gone are the days of themed dinners around the culture in the book that month. Long gone are the endless flow of wine and gift exchanges. All of us are in our 60’s and have commitments but not full time jobs yet we are challenged to find a time slot each month now that we are not tethered to our nests. But we have adapted and doing just fine.

What astounds me is how much we have read! The other day I was looking at Oprah’s Top last 2 decades of top book sections and we read over 50 percent of them. That’s wild.

Let me tell you there are a ton of great ones on Oprah’s List and you should take some time to peruse and pick a few.
