She Did It
Buying art should be fun, not intimidating. At least that’s the philosophy of Ruth and Amy Silberstein, the mother/daughter duo behind The Silberstein Gallery in Boston, Ma. The Gallery has three generations of (female) history behind it.
The background: Austrian born Hilde Gerst – Ruth’s mother — traveled widely after World War II, accumulating works of art and antiques from around the world. At the age of 45 – almost unheard of in her day – the entrepreneur opened a gallery on Madison Avenue in New York City, which soon became known for the high quality of its collection.
Ruth inherited her mother’s passion for art and people, but chose to make a life in the Boston area. She and her husband also traveled the world, and began collecting and learning about art. In 1977, Ruth founded The Silberstein Gallery which she runs today with her daughter Amy. Their relationships with dealers in New York and Europe, cultivated over three generations, give the two women access to world-class art and provide added assurance to new and experienced collectors.
But more than that, the women have created a warm and inviting gallery meant for browsing and learning about fine art in a relaxed, comfortable environment. The gallery is like a mini-museum filled with dozens of works by internationally recognized artists such as Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro, Alexander Calder, Georges Braque, Man Ray and others, with a concentration on Post-Impressionist and contemporary art by internationally recognized French and American artists.
Of particular interest to BA50s: A wine and cheese evening on April 24th from 6 to 8 pm, where Amy will share framing tips while also speaking about the process of collecting art.
