More than half the states consider it illegal to discriminate against workers who smoke, but it is understandable why an employer would not want to hire a smoker. When researchers translated the amount of time lost to smoking breaks, sick days, etc., into dollars and sense, it became painfully evident that the employers were really taking a big “hit.”
