10 Fashion Tips Post 50Admit it BA50s:  We’re often surprised when we look in the mirror.  Our bodies just aren’t the same and so the question becomes: What to wear as well as what NOT to wear? What’s “appropriate” post 50?  According to Micki Turner (www.mickiturner.com), an image consultant and personal shopper based in Berkeley, CA, it doesn’t have to be that daunting. Here are 10 tips:

1. If it looks like your outfit is missing the bottom of your skirt or dress, it’s too short.

2. The right bra can giveth or taketh away. Nothing is more matronly than sagging boobs so get a bra that fits and elevate the twins.  Good undergarments are key. (We can’t always count on the movie stars for guidance — see Anne Hathaway’s dress at the Oscars.)

3. Panty lines are ugly at any age. But if you’re a BA50 it’s even worse.  If you want to wear tight pants make sure you don’t have a panty line; invest in some Hanky Pankies or commandos.

4. Your husband is no substitute for a mirror.

5. Don’t keep something forever just because you own it. You may have to toss it out before it wears out.  Get an expert — or an honest friend — to help you to edit your closet to decide what needs to be tossed.

6. Matronly is going to happen, but that doesn’t mean you have to encourage it. Highlight your good body parts and minimize your deficits. If you are trying to cover some part that you don’t like, be sure not to “tent” your whole body as this will make you look matronly.  Muffin tops can be easily camouflaged with t-shirt puddling. If you have great calves or good arms, then show them.

7. Notice what your daughter is wearing and do the opposite. You don’t want to dress like her. Never “shop” in your daughter’s closet. For example, you may be tempted to grab your daughter’s skinny jeans and UGG boots but that is not appropriate for a 50-year-old with a 16-year-old daughter.  Instead, roll up your jeans and wear a street sneaker or an ankle boot or a ballet flat.  UGGS are for your kids.

8. Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize!  Draw attention to your face with a necklace, great earrings, and/or a great scarf.  Avoid earrings that show off droopy earlobes; posts are better than wires.

9. Heels are more flattering than flat shoes. If you can wear them, go for it!  A comfortable way to get some height is to look for something with a wedge or platform. Do not wear athletic shoes with your street wear.

10. A good haircut works wonders. You can’t be well dressed without a good haircut.
