Fashion Week in New York City officially wraps up this week and after attending and shooting more than 30 shows, 9,000+ pictures, the results are in for the top trends for Fall 2014 and I’m here to share with you the appropriate looks for gals 50+. This week we’re going to look at: color, skirt length, evening wear trends, menswear for women and Cocoon Coats.
As I looked through my camera lens throughout the shows, one trend on everyone’s mind is color. What can I buy to be in style for the Fall 2014? The first color combo (and I may sound like a broken record since I have been writing about this for three seasons) is black and white. Some collections were nearly entirely black and white. Jill Stuart and Mara Hoffman sent black and white printed suits and flowy casual dresses.
In color news, one of Fall’s hottest color is Cypress…a rich beautiful and deep green which is an easy color worn by a woman of any age. Green paired with another top Fall color in the red family Sangria and Aurora Red was every where. Both colors were seen on the runway in coats, evening wear, shoes and more. It’s also the season for winter white. There is nothing more classic for a 50+ woman than winter white. I saw this color in every category in every collection. The most colorful collections came from Tadashi Sohji and Lela Rose. Lela sent down two electric purple dresses that lit up the runway.
Thankfully there are plenty of skirts you will be able to wear at the knee or mid calf — a great and appropriate length for a 50+ gal. Yes, there were shorter skirt options but let’s keep that for the girls who have nothing better to do than to show off.
When the need for an after five or evening gown is on the wardrobe list, get ready for dresses embellished in sequins, beads, fur, feathers or a combination of any of those mentioned. Other gowns were a bit simpler in lace and floral prints. But all in all, dresses had a lot of surface interest going on.
Another trend for Fall is menswear. Structured and tailored jackets were paired with soft ruffled skirts at Rebecca Minkoff. While the menswear trend has been around for a couple of seasons, this time it is much more soft, with longer jackets paired with stripes, wider strips.
I have not seen this much texture in collections in several seasons. Sweaters were embellished with fuzzy accents, fur, fringe, feathers and fluff.
Now for the best trend. This is the season for you to buy a new coat, a cocoon coat. This coat is in between a traditional coat and a cape but has a bit more structure. Soft and elegant and in if you buy one in winter white, another HUGE trend, you’ll be in style and age appropriate for Fall 2014.
