I am incredibly active and I’m always looking for the right food fuel to keep my energy up. So I was thrilled when Honey Nut Cheerios contacted me to talk about the fact that they are heart healthy and frankly this has now become my new favorite exercise snack. There is rarely a day that I don’t exercise, it defines my days. It’s either yoga in the morning or yoga at the end of the day. I used to try to fit in a 3-mile run 3 times a week in my early 50’s but now I’m a walker and love it. Biking is my summer fun as I train for a big fundraising ride each summer and skiing is my winter go to activity.

This is getting to be the best healthy habit

So, finding the right snacks matters to me because the truth is, I’m always hungry. I keep food tucked into a plastic bag just in case my energy drops. And most recently, I learned about how Honey Nut Cheerios are heart healthy choice that taste delicious and I’ve started carrying them around with me to snack on. It’s a throwback image to think of my kids in their early years snacking on their little portions of Honey Nut Cheerios which kept them busy munching away. Now it’s my turn.

What I learned about heart health:

  • According to the CDC, nearly 1 in 3 American adults have high cholesterol and have twice the risk of heart disease as people at lower levels. Amongst other things, medical experts recommend practicing healthy living habits, like maintaining a healthy weight, getting enough physical activity and eating a heart-healthy diet. (2015; cdc.gov)
  • Three grams of soluble fiber daily from whole grain oat foods, like Honey Nut Cheerios, in a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease. Honey Nut Cheerios cereal has 0.75 gram per serving.

The other day I was out to dinner with 3 couples and when I mentioned I had rediscovered Honey Nut Cheerios as a heart healthy breakfast option, each of the husbands told me they eat them already. Wow, I had no idea.

So, the next day when I had a group of women at my house and brought out the Honey Nut Cheerios as a snack during an afternoon card game, every single woman smiled and said, “I remember those.” And, each person took a portion and smiled remembering with childlike delight how delicious they were. We talked about how they are heart healthy and it looks like they will become a regular snack for all of us.

There is something freeing about eating something that tastes so good and helps you be good to your heart.
