french chicRecently, I was inspecting one of my Pinterest creations for the over50feelingFabulous woman and noticed how many of us wear the “uniform”…black jacket, pants, and white or black shirt underneath. I know this is one of my personal go-to styles, and will admit, at times I feel like I need to apologize for it.

Recently, I introduced Better After 50 readers to author, Tish Jett, and her book Forever Chic: A Frenchwomen’s Secrets for Timeless Beauty Style and Substance. She taught me a wardrobe with a solid foundation of neutrals is a successful wardrobe. “Frenchwomen of a certain age have built their wardrobes upon a foundation of neutrals. They add spice with a few magical, highly personal finds.  That way they “own” the look.  They are masters of the art-meets-science cocktail.  Science is the structure.  Art is the refinement, the individualization of the whole.  It’s the artistic twists that transform the ubiquitous into the unusual, the unique,” writes Jett.

We need not apologize for repetition of solid neutrals in our wardrobes.  In order to have a closet which functions best, this is how it should be.  Jett writes, “Don’t think for a moment, how boring.  It’s anything but. It’s intelligent, ageless, and always, always chic. Best of all, it makes getting dressed so easy. Within the spectrum of neutrals, there are vast nuances of shades, textures, and possibilities.” Spring 2015 is full of soft neutral collections providing inspirational options; as well as, many black & white styles. One of the “on trend” color palettes is called SPICE MARKET and brings to spring a more saturated, brown-based color scheme…perfect to pair with neutrals.

There are times I believe women are so excited about sunshine and flowers, we tend to go overboard a bit with spring inspirations. The French have taught us to be under control and reserved with those choices.

In Parisian Chic: A Style Guide by Ines de la Fressange and Sophie Gachet, women past 40 are given golden rules to follow.

“Golden Rule #1: Never follow convention. Never be bland. Never neglect yourself

Golden Rule #2: Always choose the right accessory to transform your look. (Example: Rather than a white shirt with your neutrals, select a fuchsia color instead.)”

Don’t apologize for the neutral base…work it! This spring select scarves, jewelry, beautiful blouses, purses and shoes with purpose to develop your own style and enjoy the season. Think refined, simple, elegance and do not go overboard. One star of the show is enough.

I am taking my “uniform” and mixing it with a little color. What will you do?

Thanks for reading…I really appreciate your thoughts!
