A holiday/festival that commemorates the liberation of a people from the binds of slavery should most definitely incorporate sweet dishes to enhance its celebratory mood. The Jewish holiday of Passover, however, cautions us amidst the pomp and circumstance to remember the tears shed, the arduous, backbreaking tasks that were imposed upon the Israelites, and the hardships endured by our ancestors before and as they embarked on their course to freedom.
And so, the sweet (charoset) is tempered with the savory (saltwater, bitter herbs) and matzoh, “the bread of affliction,” during the ceremonial Passover meal, the Seder, and the ensuing remainder of the holiday, which for Jews in the US, last eight days.
On that first night, a line from the Haggadah, the text which is read at the Seder, implores “all who are hungry, let them come and eat.” We can certainly get behind that!
