Wait, what?? No meat or alcohol?
The first time I went on a retreat where neither meat nor alcohol was allowed I was pretty freaked out. In anticipation of it, I went out to a nice steak dinner the night before sipping from a beautiful bottle of wine trying to cure my anxiety.
After I learned how to meditate on day one of my retreat, had my first scrumptious vegetarian meal and then slept more soundly than I had in years, my anxiety disappeared.
Our Women’s Travel Wisdom Retreat this October at Mandala Springs will also be meat and wine free. If this worries you as it did me all those years ago, I get it.
But don’t let that stop you.
I am a big cocktail gal, I wrote a book on cocktails but even I know that letting go of my security blanket for just four nights makes my body happy. It’s restorative and it cures so many things – so fast – including sleep patterns.
I do this type of retreat regularly, and afterward I sleep so much better and feel much stronger, calmer, and more energetic.
Recently I went a month without alcohol and you should have seen my skin after that month, I looked 10 years younger! Let’s get real – I have a house in Bordeaux, France so I’m not going to give up wine forever – don’t worry!
A clean, uncluttered mind allows me to relax deeply, commune with nature more fully, and connect with others more profoundly. I recall being at this kind of retreat in France, and after listening to a moving speaker and then singing en groupe, tears began to stream down my face in appreciation and gratitude. It was one of the most profound moments of my life. This is precisely why we feel strongly that our retreat needs to be health-focused as cleaning out for a few days brings so many benefits to both mind and soul.
So here’s my advice if this wine or meat thing is stopping you from signing up for our Women’s Travel Wisdom Retreat.
1. If you don’t think you can go for four nights without wine, this is likely a MUST-do retreat for you. 4 nights is just four nights, not a lifetime.
2. The health gurus always tell us we need to eat more vegetables, right? Here’s a chance for you to enjoy some yummy plant-based meals cooked for you allowing you to sample what it feels like but with no effort. You may find out that you love it and you might decide that going without meat for one day a week or one day a month is something you want to try when you return home. Who knows?
3. Getting out of your comfort zone is challenging but also invigorating. It makes us feel young again and proud of ourselves when we accomplish something we didn’t think we could do.
What I also know is this.
If you are concerned about the price, please think about this. How much money do you spend on dinners out, on that cute pair of shoes you really didn’t need, on Doctor visits, including medications, supplements, and shrinks?
The price for our retreat is simply what it costs to put this event on – most of our speakers and workshop leaders are taking pay cuts because they believe in what we are doing.
So don’t forget that YOU are worth it.
