It’s time to start thinking about changing over our closets from summer to fall. While I get excited by the idea of bringing out the cashmere sweaters, boots, and darker washes of denim, I dread the actual task of the closet changeover. For motivation, I crank up the volume on my favorite Spotify playlist and pour myself a glass of iced tea or wine, depending on the time of day. Even though it is time-consuming, I look forward to taking stock of my wardrobe – what I love, what looks dated, what needs to be replaced and specific items I’m missing. Often just adding a few new carefully selected pieces can give me the wardrobe refresh I am looking for.

This fall, it’s all about stylish clothing that is also practical to wear. Updated preppy plaids and polos are in, from boyfriend blazers and shirt-jackets (did you know they are called shackets?) to comfy sweaters. Straight leg and wider leg pants, some with elastic waistbands, are taking center stage in place of the slim legs of seasons past. Fresh textured and patterned sneakers, mules and booties offer a quick and easy way of adding some pizzaz to your wardrobe. Here are six outfits to give you some fashion inspiration for this upcoming season.

The star of this outfit is this gorgeous snake print chelsea boot by Marc Fisher. They make a fashion statement yet are neutral enough to match lots in your closet. With a fresh boxy shape and oversized chest pockets, this workwear-inspired poplin shirt is one you’ll want to wear everywhere. These Levis jeans are a best seller and are intended to flatter the booty, and who doesn’t want that? Their cropped length will show off the boots.

Madewell Boxy Workwear Shirt $75

Levis Wedgie High Waist Crop Straight Leg Jeans $68.60

Marc Fisher Yale Chelsea Boot $159.95

Made of super-soft corduroy, this perfectly oversized shirt-jacket is styled like a vintage men’s shirt with drop shoulders and buttons down the front. With straight legs and a high seamed waistband, these off-white pants have a clean and classic vibe. Complete the look with these chelsea boots with a utilitarian lug sole.

Madewell Quilted Walton Shirt-Jacket $168

Madewell Marling Pants $95

Madewell Ivy Chelsea Boot $198

Weekend plaid is perfected in this shirt-jacket, known this season as a shacket (40% off right now.) These slightly cropped stovepipe fatigue pants are soft to the touch and military inspired. They are a nice alternative to denim without looking too dressy. Part bootie, part shoe—this low-cut leather style can handle at least three seasons.

Lucky Lumber Shacket $83.40

The Brady Low-cut Bootie $168

Madewell Stovepipe Fatigue Pants $88

Preppy style is on trend for Fall 2020. With its open polo collar, this lightweight merino sweater has a laid-back look. These stovepipe jeans have become my favorite cut from Madewell. The 10 1/2 inch rise is high waisted, but not too high (especially for us petite BA50’s.) Not too slim, not too wide, they are just right!

Madewell Polo Sweater $79.50

Madewell Stovepipe Jeans in Antoine Wash $128

Madewell Sidewalk Low-Top Sneaker in Spotted Calf Hair $98

For an effortless and smart look, pairing a tee shirt with a blazer and dark denim always hits the mark. Madewell’s northside tee comes in many colors and has lots of great reviews. I love this navy glen plaid blazer, which will work with so many outfits. The dark wash, slimming stovepipe jeans might just become your favorite pair.

Madewell Northside Vintage Tee $16

Madewell Dorset Blazer in Navy Glen Plaid $168

Madewell Stovepipe Jeans in Macintosh Wash $135

Luxe and special, this shrunken V-neck sweater has a slightly slouchy fit that nips in at the waist for the perfect front-tuck situation. Crafted from satin-backed crepe, these wide-leg crop pants have a matching tie at the waist that gives them a little extra oomph. Polished enough to wear to something fancy, with a pull-on band to make them pajamas-level comfy. The printed calf hair skimmer finishes the look.

Madewell Cashmere V-Neck Sweater $98

Madewell Tie-Waist Huston Pull-On Crop Pants $85

Madewell Frances Skimmer Mule in Calf Hair $128
