On these long, cold, gray New England days, when I am trying (unsuccessfully) to cut back on sugar and therefore baking less, I turn to reading. Curl...
BA50 LOVES Oprah's Super Soul Podcast and on April 6th Oprah talked to Harvard Professor, social scientist and author Arthur Brooks about his #1 New York Times bestselling new book, From Strength to Strength: Finding Happiness and Success at Every Stage of Life.
This podcast is truly the perfect gift of advice and insights and inspiration for BA50s. We learn about the key to happiness in the context of our priorities: faith, family, real friends and service. We learn that no matter what stage of life you are with this mindset and commitment comes greater happiness which is really relevant for those of us who are empty nested and looking for meaning at this stage.
I particularly love the way Brooks embraces difficult situations. He says that every 5 years we have life quakes and these are the moments that create the most meaning. Most people spend too much time trying to avoid unpleasant choices but in fact this is where we do our best learning and growing....
Whatever the reason, I thought last year's binging behavior was over -- so over. My couch slouch posture had righted itself and I walked defiantly away from the screen and clicker last May but alas, I'm back with no regrets.
I have even upped my binging game this time as the ridiculously short days of daylight and the crazy rains creep in and have kept us inside these past 2 weeks. Armed with the new Disney Plus App and Apple TV access, an ability to caste effortlessly without dialing up the kids on the west coast, wrapped in my new faux fur blankie from Pottery Barn, I am ever ready for my great escapes.
Ready, Aim, Click.....I dim the lights, aim the TV clicker and let the stories roll.
So here's what I'm loving lately and what my friends are recommending: ...
"Hurricane Henri is predicted to arrive early Sunday," I said to my kids.
Be careful Mom they chimed in from the other coast.
I'm so excited. I don't care if Henri isn't well behaved. He's invited, and we will be ready. "I can't wait, I wish you were here. ("OMG, I'm so annoying, I have to stop saying I wish you were here -- but I laugh to myself, since they can't come at least Henri is coming")
Guest Henri requires some prep. We prefer a short stay but hope he's not too irritable. I fill the car with groceries, batteries, grab the last flash light from the drugstore and wonder about that bad decision to NOT spring for the generator....
I've been on a reading frenzy and am trolling for more! Surveyed my buddies and added some of their favorite reads to my list and wanted to share if you are looking for a good read....
