It has long been held that a healthy, adult sleep pattern is to fall asleep between 9:00 and 11:00 pm, wake up around 2:30 or 3:00 am, doze lightly for an hour and a half or so and then fall asleep again until sunrise. Dr. Rosenthal describes this in his book, Transcendence. Turns out this was also the norm many hundreds of years ago. It is called bi-phasic sleep.
