feliceThis past week we’ve been inundated with positive aging in the media on every platform of entertainment, Traditional magazines (Vogue and Sports Illustrated, Instagram and Facebook. Podcasts (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), Film…The Book Club, and TV News, GMA ran a full week of Menopause awareness features including how to cool hot flashes.
How did Aging become the new cool? The only thing hot about Menopause were hot flashes…but suddenly being over 50, 60 and 70 is trending.
Last night my husband and I went to our local movie theater and watched the new film Book Club: The Next Chapter with Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candace Bergen and Mary Steenburgen. We were truly blown away that this film had gotten such great reviews.
Trust me, it’s hokey and sappy and painfully predictable but what we loved is that these women were embracing their aging and sharing their pearls. I was shocked that a group of 15 year old girls in our row chose this film and I kept looking over at them wondering whether they felt inspired by this girlfriend adventure and the love lives of 70 year old women on a road trip to Italy.
The explosion in the media is a full court embrace of strength and character and the beauty of healthy living which has triggered a Tipping Point into positive aging for us all.
It seems like suddenly the media doesn’t want to miss out on the aging train…but suddenly those of us who have felt less visible, less seen and more self-conscious about our wrinkles, graying hair, and crepey skin are standing up a little taller.
I’m never quite sure why it takes the celebs to open the flood gates to what is acceptable or not…but this time, for we BA50s the timing is just right.
When Martha Stuart draped her 81 year old body over the couch in Sports Illustrated this week we saw this as an invitation to you all.
