agingEven though we know that getting older happens, it can still be a shock to look in the mirror and see the effects of time, gravity and hormones!

The wrinkles! The loss of elasticity! The dark circles! OH MY!

But we’re here to tell you that you CAN get older AND see a glowing, vibrant face looking back at you in the mirror.

As two Health and Psychology of Eating coaches who are committed to helping women feel fantastic as they move into this powerful time after age 45, we’ve both experienced the impact of aging on the reflection looking back at us in the mirror. It’s shown up as late-life acne, hair loss and puffy skin, just to name a few of the challenging offenders!

In order to merge our passion for health and our desire to look our best, we’ve refined our beauty regime so that it’s more than skin deep.  We’ve created protocols that impact our outsides as well as our insides, in a positive, nourishing and healthy way (because real glowing beauty comes from more than a pot of expensive moisturizer, especially as we age).

In this article, we’re going to share clear, usable information that will help you create glowing, vibrant beauty from the inside out.

FACT #1:

Hormones are chemical messengers in our body.  When they are well-balanced, we feel and look energetic, healthy and vibrant.

STRATEGY:

Know that taking care of your hormones IS taking care of your beauty. Understanding the interplay between our hormones, health and beauty is key as we age.

FACT #2:

When we hit about 35 or so, (as we enter perimenopause and then menopause) our hormones begin to shift big time! This means that our bodies are much more sensitive and everything shows up on the mirror (there’s no hiding those late nights, long to-do lists and extra glass of wine anymore!)

STRATEGY:

Know that you need extra TLC and attention. Just pushing through won’t work for you anymore.  You’ve got to find a more supportive, gentle, and REAL approach when it comes to your own self-care.

FACT #3:

Cortisol, which is produced in excess when you’re stressed, causes your skin to be 10 times more impacted by aging! Yes, reducing stress is a MUST (sorry, but you can’t high-pressure your way to beautiful skin).

STRATEGY:

Pleasure! Luxuriating in a bath, increasing sexual pleasure (alone or with a partner), and savoring a juicy mango instead of snarfing down a snack-bar are all wonderful ways to lower your cortisol and improve the functioning of all your other hormones.

FACT #4:

Lack of sleep is impacting what you see in the mirror.

STRATEGY:

Get serious about your sleep hygiene: Regular bedtime, dark room, no electronics before bed, sleep naked (for a little extra pleasure.)

FACT #5

Many of the anti-aging lotions and potions are actually HARMING not only your health, but ultimately taking a toll on your appearance as well.

STRATEGY:

Use all natural products or make your own. Here are two of our favorite simple homemade beauty products!

  1. Anti-inflammatory Face Mask

Simply mix these 3 Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp Turmeric  (Turmeric is super anti-inflammatory which slows down skin damage, evens skin tone and diminishes wrinkles)
  • 1 tsp Raw Honey (Hydrating, antiseptic and anti-microbial)
  • 1 heaping tablespoon Plain Organic Yogurt (moisturizing and prevents premature aging)Slather on your skin, let it sit for 15 minutes or so, and rinse with a warm washcloth.
  1. Coconut Oil Make-up remover

Ingredient:

100% coconut oil – all by itself.

Coconut oil is a simple, hydrating, super-effective make-up remover that nourishes your skin and hormones versus depleting and toxifying your skin.

Don’t get overwhelmed by doing everything all at once. Choose one strategy from this list and go for it!
