Gone are the days of having to wear ugly, over-sized sweaters and dresses that made you look like a sack of potatoes. Today, you can look fabulous at fifty; looking, feeling and thinking that you’re younger than you are!

With so many fashionable clothes to choose from, the mature woman can now seek out wardrobe staples that make them feel vibrant, youthful and confident, but without looking like “mutton dressed as lamb”, as the saying goes. By following a few simple fashion tips, you can look as young as you feel:

Changing Your Overall Look

If you’re going to update your wardrobe, you need to make sure that you’re bridging this gap between how old you are (or how old you’re dressing!) and how young you want to look. A good way to do this is to go shopping with a fashion-forward friend or even your daughter. With their honest opinions, you’ll be able to find things that look good, giving you the confidence that you’re not going too over the top with your choices.

It’s also important that everything else about you reflects this new, youthful look, so it might be time to change your hairdo. There are a wide variety of magazines that you can look to for inspiration – choose something that will suit your face shape and ask your hairstylist / friends for their opinion too.

Finally, to make space for those new clothes, you’re going to need to have a clear out in your wardrobe. Be brutal as you go through your clothes asking yourself when you last wore something and whether you’re ever going to wear it again. If you haven’t worn something in the last year or so, it’s highly likely that you won’t wear it again, so place in it a bag for charity or sell it on eBay.

Then, before you go shopping, have a look around and see which shops you think you’ll find your new look in. There are a variety of high-street and online shops that you’ll find inspiration and ideas from, including

Staple Items for Your Wardrobe

It’s important to fill your wardrobe with one-off designer pieces alongside staple items that you can mix-and-match with others. These include blazers, cardigans, jeans and swimwear.

Cardigans and Sweaters: When you’re creating layers, you may prefer to opt for a blazer but there are also some fantastic ranges of sweaters and cardigans that are available. They’re cozy, modern and feminine and are perfect for adding to your wardrobe to wear all year round. You can wear these over dresses, blouses or tops to bring a gorgeous finishing touch to your overall outfit.

Jeans: These are going to be one trusty item that you won’t want to be missing from your wardrobe. They’re a classic piece of clothing that’s comfortable and they’re also great for waist control. Once you’ve popped these on, you can team them with a simple top and cardigan, and you’re ready to go. Look for jeans that have a dark wash, are stretchy, have an elastic waist and even a tummy slimming panel.

Jackets: Another great way to finish your outfit off but with a slightly smarter edge than a cardigan is to utilize a jacket. These include denim jackets, leather jackets and trench coats. Eternally youthful, these will be an important part of your overall look. When choosing one you should try to find something that’s comfortable to wear, has a tailored, figure-flattering look and is versatile, so you can use it for both smart and casual wear.

Shoes: Don’t opt for skyscraper heels as these have disaster written all over them. Instead, opt for stylish flats, wedges or strapped sandals that are from a high-quality brand. These will provide you with versatility wherever you go as well as that much-needed comfort.

Swimwear: Yes, you can feel attractive in swimwear! Thankfully, many brands have introduced tankinis and one-piece swimsuits that help to make you feel great when you’re by the pool on holiday or attending your local swim class. The important thing to remember when shopping for one of these is to opt for quality and, if you’re feeling quite self-conscious, there are a number available with inbuilt shapers.

With all of these items in your wardrobe, you’re free to create a number of show-stopping outfits for every type of occasion. And once you’ve filled your wardrobe full of these fresh, stylish clothes, you’ll feel much more confident in yourself, and will definitely be fabulous at 50!
