The number of students entering law school rises every year, but there is still a discrepancy between the number of male and female students who enter those schools and pass the bar. The bar is the licensing examination that allows lawyers to practice law in their states. In recent years, several female lawyers stood out among their male peers. These women helped pass new laws, bring awareness to certain problems and assist in cases that gained media attention. The most successful women in law today include some familiar and less familiar faces.

Alanna Rutherford makes the list of the most successful women in law as well as the list of top African American attorneys working in the United States today. Rutherford made history when she became a partner at the firm Boies Schiller and gained the title of equity partner, which means that she has a stake in that firm.
